Fiber Network Testing and Maintenance

AEC

With our assistance and expertise, you can learn everything about fiber testing and Ensure that the fiber optic network has the fundamental principles for reliable data transmission to your customers.Networks are constantly evolving, and to achieve this, they require continuous maintenance and upgrades.

The rapid pace of technology advancement and the increasing complexity of networks, especially with the transition to 5G, pose challenges to supporting network evolution.

Fiber optics and fiber optic cable installation are crucial elements and the backbone of modern data transmission networks. With the increasing demand for network speed and bandwidth, limitations in distance and losses have been reduced.

Naturally, the light signal decreases in power as it progresses. Therefore, technicians use a light source and power meter to send light to one end and measure the signal at the receiving end. Low power at the endpoint can indicate a fault in the fiber path that disrupts the signal, such as excessive bending, poor connections, fiber breakage, or contamination in patch cords, pigtails, adapters, or patch panels.

Common contaminants in connector parts are dust, oils, and water-resistant gels included. For example, a simple touch with oily hands can immediately deposit grease on a connector, which can cause unacceptable signal degradation once a connection is established. Dust and fine particles present in the air can settle on any exposed surfaces.

Buffer gel, a common component in most fiber optic cables, can easily find its way onto a ferrule or patch panel surface, causing contamination.

Given these factors, it should be noted that as optical signals traverse the network, various variables can impact transmission quality. To ensure speed and maintain the required bandwidth, periodic testing and inspection of the fiber optic path are indispensable.

Fiber optic cleaning and troubleshooting

Dirty or damaged fiber optic adapters and connectors are one of the most common causes of optical network problems. Various inspection and cleaning solutions assist technicians and engineers in assessing and correcting these issues.

Fiber Optic Testing, Verification, and Certification:

Using standardized protocols to verify and maintain the integrity and quality of the optical paths is essential. That’s why AEC provides a complete set of fiber optic testing solutions to ensure network integrity.

OTDR testers and intelligent handheld testing equipment (such as EXFO , AFL and Grandway Tasters) can fulfill any testing and quality assessment requirements for fiber optic networks . OTDR is an essential handheld tool for fiber optic technicians, similar to well-known multimeters used for electrical circuits. OTDRs perform quick measurements of key optical parameters such as loss (dB), optical return loss (dB), length (meters), power (dBm), and provide analysis, symbolic mapping, and graphical representation of the path. This enables technicians to verify the performance of the fiber optic links and troubleshoot potential issues while on-site.

AEC technicians compile documentation and technical specifications of each link into a booklet, ensuring the status of each link is clearly defined and periodically rechecked.

The Testing and Maintenance Department of AEC consists of network engineers and technicians. They could perform routine cleaning, inspection, and testing using scopes, OTDR devices, and  Fluke tester to ensure the highest quality and bandwidth of the fiber optic links in active networks. Test results are provided to customers, and test certificates are issued in compliance with the applicable standards.
